Life's Amazing Musical Journey

Deric Dyer Bio

Deric Dyer was born in Ireland and lived in England until 1967, when his trumpet-player father moved his family to Bermuda – where Deric’s musical career began.  In Spring of 1975, after meeting Cliff Goodwin and joining the American Standard Band, Deric moved to America. Just two years later, ASB would become Joe Cocker‘s band. Playing in Joe’s horn section with the legendary Bobby Keys, Deric quickly learned the art of Rock/R&B sax. This proved to be valuable experience for what was still to come in his career. After a couple of years of playing with Joe, Deric left to play and record with many of the best of Boston’s music scene, with a highlight being the recording of the solo album from Rick Ocasek of The Cars.

Deric’s next life-changing opportunity came in January 1987, when he had the good fortune to audition for Tina Turner. He spent an amazing two years as part of her Break Every Rule World Tour, and when Tina was paired with Joe Cocker on Summer festival shows in Germany, Deric and Joe rekindled their friendship. Deric wasn’t home from the tour for long when promoter Michael Lang called to ask if he would like to re-join Joe and the rest of the band for the Unchain My Heart World Tour. Deric jumped at the chance to revisit that special time in his career.

Deric continued to tour with Joe throughout the 80’s, 90’s, and 2000’s, as well as playing with Roger Hodgson, Al Jarreau, Toni Hadley and Andrea Bocelli. Belgium’s Night of The Proms reunited him with his Tina bandmate (and the best man at his wedding), John Miles. In 2012 and 2013, Deric was asked to take part in the John Lennon Double Fantasy Bermuda Tribute Concerts, where he worked with Maxi Priest, Biggie Irie, Roy Young, Uzimon and many amazing Bermudian artists to celebrate the music of John Lennon.

Two years after losing Joe, arguably the greatest voice in Rock & Roll, Deric reached out to his old friends to ask if they could come together again to help keep Joe’s music alive. Their answer was a resounding "YES!" and “Mad Dogs Unchained” was born. MDU went on to play Worcester’s Bull Mansion (among other New England venues), release an hour-long documentary video with a live CD, and travel Europe for eighteen shows in 2018. Deric is always looking to develop new projects and to continue working with his old friends and bandmates, including Cliff Goodwin, Mitch Chakour, Marty Richards, Wolf Ginandes, and his newest find, singer Tim Pike.

During the pandemic, Deric also collaborated with James Duncan in Barbados and Tony Brannon in Bermuda to produce “Hope!” - a song for the time - with the goal of helping lift the spirits of people everywhere. His next release “Tennessee Waltz” is planned for this spring, with a special medley of Beatles' songs for children set to follow. Armed with five cover songs and three original songs from old friend Jonn Savannah, Deric took a recent trip to LA to record at legendary studio Sunset Sound with friends and bandmates Mitch, Cliff, Wolf, Marty and Tim. Those first recordings from new group The Trilbee Kings is due for release this summer, and will be available on vinyl and at all digital outlets - with live shows to follow.

The Journey Continues.
